Time to Honour John Day!

‘The General’ John Day and his bright orange push Utes are quite simply an iconic part of Australian Speedway. For over fifty years they have been parading around Speedways in Western Australia and although they aren’t used as often for the Late Models, the Day family have still become well and truly entrenched within every division, meaning that this weekend’s event is a big deal for every single racer.

It is for this reason that this weekend we have the biggest field of the season nominated for ‘The Generals’ Race, which will double as Round Six of the XLI Pro Dirt Series.

After a few weeks rest and relaxation, twenty five drivers have signaled their intentions to compete this weekend in what is set to be an emotional and hard fought event.

Heading the list would have to be ‘The Black Knight’ Ryan Halliday, who has been in incredible form thus far and is the last start winner coming into this event. His new Longhorn Chassis has served him well to this point, but he is set to have even more competition joining him this weekend as Kye Blight makes his season debut aboard his own brand new Longhorn.

Blight has been waiting on his motor the last few shows and is chomping at the bit to test out his new package and get some runs on the board as soon as the car hits the track.

Jamie Oldfield is another who is making his season debut this weekend, after spending much of the season competing in another division. In honour of ‘The General’ Jamie will be doing double duty, running both his Sprintcar and the Late Model, but this only serves to fire him up as he looks for success in both divisions.

Brother Warren has already recorded a feature win this season also and will be determined not to let his sibling bypass him in his first race of the season, so Warren is sure to pull out all the stops to stay ahead of Jamie and the other twenty three cars in the field.

‘The 0 Show’ Brad Blake is the defending winner of this race, having claimed the John Day feature this time last year. A race that means a lot to him, given his past wins of the John Day Trophies in Claremont Days and that means he too will be fighting hard to get another trophy on his mantle. Blake, Halliday and Warren Oldfield are the only three drivers to win features so far this season and all three will be keen to keep that record alive this weekend.

Jay Cardy and Matt Goodlad have both recorded two podium finishes so far this season but haven’t quite been able to break through for that elusive victory. Could they grab a big one this weekend?

Brent Vosbergen and Michael Holmes are the only two other drivers who have claimed a podium finish in the five rounds of the XLI Pro Dirt Series that have been held so far. Both have been right on the pace at every round they have competed in and will be hopeful of turning that speed into another strong result next time out.

Daniel ‘Nudge’ Ameduri and Michael ‘The Mount Helena Hustler’ Comley are set to continue their battle for Rookie of the Year honours, while others like ‘Red Hot Roni’ Veronica McCann, Paul Stubber and Lee Watt have been knocking on the door of a podium finish for a number of weeks now and could quite possibly breakthrough this weekend.

Add in a whole host of others who are desperate to grab the win in this, ‘The General’ John Day Tribute Race and there are sure to be fireworks on the track from the time the first green flag drops until that chequered flag flies once again.
