Paul Stubber put in a smaller motor with less horsepower for tonight’s King of Kwinana event at the Perth Motorplex after damaging his main engine recently, and then quite simply proceeded to demolish the opposition in spectacular style!
He set the quickest time in qualifying, the only driver in the 16 second bracket, then won his heat (only to be relegated two positions, but we won’t dwell on that fact!), then raced away to lead much of the thirty lap feature, lapping up to fifth place and in the process setting a new thirty lap track record.
Warren Oldfield, in his first night in a brand new car fresh from the US of A, qualified off pole position, and as the race went green he would drop low and grab the lead while Stubber went high and settled into second.
Joe Chalmers would hold his position in third, an impressive performance from the youngster, until Michael Holmes and Marc Giancola made their way past him.
On lap five Stubber would make his move, racing past Oldfield to grab the lead and from here he was untouchable as he pulled away and began to work his way through traffic.
Behind him, Giancola would grab third from Holmes and then all of a sudden Jay Cardy, coming from position eleven, was in fifth and looking for a way through.
Cardy would pass Holmes shortly and then a couple of laps later would make his move on Giancola and set out after Oldfield and of course Stubber, who by this time had a huge lead.
Stubber, was at this stage in heavy lapped traffic as he looked to pass tenth place at the halfway distance of the race.
Oldfield was half a lap behind in second as Cardy and Giancola set out after him, then just as Cardy went to pass for second place, Oldfield spun and was able to keep it going. Cardy just touched him on the way through but it was minimal, both cars continuing, Cardy in second and Oldfield dropping back to fifth.
Stubber was on a mission, lapping sixth placed Ryan Halliday on lap twenty five then fifth placed Oldfield on lap twenty seven as he went on to claim the win by nearly ten seconds from Cardy. Marc Giancola and Holmes were neck a neck at the finish line but it was Giancola who just got the nod, the top four cars the only ones on the lead lap.
The win would be Stubber’s fourth career Late Model win at the Motorplex, and also makes him the fourth different winner from four rounds in the Sims Metal Management Pro Dirt Series so far this season.
Late Models will now have just a week’s break before returning once again to the high banks of the Perth Motorplex on the 24th of November. This will be Round Five of the Sims Metal Management Pro Dirt Series.
