Oldfield in a Thriller!

Season 2022/23 for the Late Models and the Pro Dirt Series kicked off in the best possible fashion tonight at the Allwest Plant Hire – Ellenbrook Speedway, with the opening event, presented by the team at CTM Recruitment Pty Ltd, seeing great racing in every event and it all culminated in an incredibly close finish, just 0.089 seconds separating the winner Warren Oldfield from second placed Jason Oldfield!
The race was so exciting throughout that there were three leaders, four official lead changes and in fact, the winner Warren Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) would only lead one lap of the entire feature, but it was the one that counted!
Four different drivers would take out the four preliminary heat races earlier in the day, with Warren Oldfield, Brent Vosbergen (Team Vosbergen Racing – TVR), Rod Musarra (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057419831114) and Michael Holmes (Michael Holmes Racing) each claiming a win, and setting old foes Brent Vosbergen and Warren Oldfield onto the front row for the thirty-lap feature ahead of Holmes and Musarra.
As the feature race went green, Vosbergen would lead with Warren right on his tail as they crossed the line for the first time, Musarra just tucked in behind them.
The top three would pull away slightly as further back, fourth placed Holmes was passed by Jason Oldfield on the second circulation.
By lap three Vosbergen has begun to stretch his legs out front as Jason Oldfield closed on Musarra for third.
Jason would set the quickest lap of the race to that point on lap four, then use the high line to pass Musarra for third, while Warren would emulate his brothers’ efforts the very next lap to also record a quick lap.
Lap seven would see the first stoppage with Joe Chalmers (Team BCM Motorsport:) spinning in turn two, Luke Halliday (CTM Recruitment Racing) left with nowhere to go and climbing over the front of the stranded Chalmers machine, ending his race while Chalmers was able to restart from the rear.
Vosbergen was again away on the restart, with Jason Oldfield using the highline to pass brother Warren for second as the race resumed.
Warren chased hard and dove back underneath through turn two, but Jason had the speed and held the position, the two brothers closing quickly onto the tail of Vosbergen.
On lap ten Jason continued to use the momentum, going right around the outside of Vosbergen to claim the lead, and a lap later he was nearly a second in front as Warren also looked to make his way past Vosbergen.
Suddenly, another Oldfield in Jamie found his way in the top four, and it became a battle of three for second place.
Jay Cardy (Cardy Racing Components) meanwhile was also storming his way through the field, coming from the second back row to be in seventh by the halfway point of the race.
By this point, Jason was over two seconds ahead of Vosbergen who was desperately fighting to hold off Warren on the lowline and Jamie on the highline, the trio fighting for second place.
Jason found himself in traffic on lap seventeen, but it would only affect his momentum slightly, the traffic proving more difficult for the three-car battle for second place.
Lap twenty was chaos, as the fans saw Jason Oldfield run high, Vosbergen use the lowline to steal the lead, then Jamie Oldfield crunch the turn two wall, damaging the right rear of his #51 machine and losing third to Warren.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, the yellows came on with twenty-one laps completed as Cardy spun in turn two, Veronica McCann (Veronica McCann – Red Hot Racing) lucky to avoid his machine, as were the remaining field behind them.
Jamie would have the infield scrutineers look at his car during the stoppage where they removed the dangling parts of his rear wing, while Chalmers would also be forced infield on the stoppage with a flat tyre after previously having gone to the rear and fighting back to the top ten.
Again, Jason Oldfield had an epic restart and flew by Vosbergen to retake the lead with eight to go, while Warren also began to pressure Vosbergen once again on the inside. Ken Macpherson (KMM – Ken Macpherson Motorsport) would also get by Jamie Oldfield for fourth.
With six laps to go, Warren finally got by Vosbergen for second, while Rod Musarra began to put pressure on Jamie, minus his rear deck and wing, for fifth before the yellows came on again, this time for David Boyes (Boyes Motorsport) who spun in turn two to set up a restart with four laps remaining.
Jason and Warren shot away like bullets as the race resumed once again, with Ken Macpherson behind Vosbergen for fourth and Musarra getting by Jamie Oldfield for fifth.
Jason remained high and Warren stayed low in the side-by-side battle for the lead, just 0.164 seconds between them with two to go and then 0.191 on the final lap with the white flag flying.
Warren grabbed the lead down the back straight in the final circulation but coming through the final corners Jason threw everything he could at Warren, but came up just short, Warren claiming the win, his sixth Ray Tulk Memorial, by just 0.089 seconds.
Vosbergen would officially finish in third place, with Macpherson and Musarra rounding out the top five finishers.
It was a great way to begin the 2022/23 Pro Dirt Series, which will be back in action on the 5th of November at the Perth Motorplex for the Westernapolis event, though there will also be a non PDS points show at the Perth Motorplex next weekend for Powerpalooza, so stay tuned for all those details in the coming week!
