Huge Field for Salute to the General

For over fifty years, ‘The General’ John Day was driving around the Speedway tracks of Western Australia with his bright orange pace ute, starting races and winning hearts with his professional presentation and genuine love of the sport.

Unfortunately ‘The General’ is no longer with us, but out of that sadness, comes some joy as this weekend, divisions unite to celebrate the life of John with the annual ‘Salute to the General’ event at the Perth Motorplex.

Of course, there is no better way to honour such a speedway legend than by putting on a show and with no less than twenty five Late Models nominated for the event, we are guaran damn teed so put on a show worthy of the General.

Heading the list of nominees for this Saturday nights event, doubling as round five of the 2016/17 Maxima Oils Pro Dirt Series, is none other than the fastest trio currently in the West: current point’s leader Brad Blake, second placed Jamie Oldfield and dual 2016 feature race winner Marc Giancola.

Blake leads the Series by just five points over his closest rival Oldfield, with a series of consistent finishes, while Oldfield claimed the last feature win at the Perth Motorplex, about a month ago now. Courtesy of these results, the duo are also currently tied for the lead in the Perth Motorplex Track Championship, something that both will be looking to gain the advantage in this weekend. Add in Giancola who claimed the opening win of the season at the Motorplex and then doubled up a few weeks back with a feature win at Bunbury Speedway, and this trio are going to be very hard to look past.

That being said, in a twenty five car strong field, there are a whole host of other drivers looking to lay their claim the to the feature win this Saturday night. Jay Cardy is always quick but hasn’t quite had the start to the season that he would have liked despite a podium finish at the Motorplex, Warren Oldfield and Kye Blight have both claimed a podium each and will be looking to improve this time around and Lee Watt, who has impressed so far this season and is sitting inside the top five in both point scores, will be hoping to continue his good form.

Add in ‘Red Hot Roni’ Veronica McCann who has shown significant speed many times this season, albeit with little luck going her way, Paul Joss who has finally grabbed his traditional #69 for his immaculate machine and his fellow Collie local Morgan Melvin who returns to the seat this weekend hungry for a strong run.

Matt Goodlad is always quick, Paul Stubber has shown blistering speed so far this summer and one can never count out former National Champions Brad Ludlow and Ryan Halliday!

Michael Holmes has already had two heat wins this season and will be looking to turn that into feature race results, James Batley has impressed so far in his rookie season and Ryan Ludlow is one who has recently stepped up his game with some improved results, so realistically, the main event win could go any which way and there are still eight other drivers who we haven’t even mentioned yet!

All this adds up to one show that you simply wouldn’t want to miss, so why would you be anywhere else but trackside this Saturday night, not just to see twenty of the best thunder and lightning Late Models battling it out, but also to honour the man, the myth, the legend: ‘The General’ John Day.
