Honouring Another Legend

In recent years the Perth Motorplex has worked hard to honour the legends of our sport and this weekend will see that happen once again as John Cardy is honoured as part of the WA Title event, proudly presented by McPhee Freight, Maddington Toyota and Canning Vale Toyota.

John raced a number of divisions over the years with much success, claiming fourteen feature race wins at Claremont Speedway alone.

He would experience the most success in Super Sedans, with some great results including a second place in the 1982/83 WA Super Sedan Title at Ellenbrook, then again at Claremont in 1993/94, before finally breaking through in 1995/96 with a Title win at Carnarvon.

After this success, John became one of the pioneers of Late Models in WA, helping to build the division and going on to feature on the podium in the very first WA Title in 1997/98 where he came second.

Previously he also raced in their very first meeting in WA, held at the Geraldton Speedway, where he won a heat race but was ultimately unable to finish the feature race.

John would go on to feature on the WA Late Model Championship podium on three more occasions in the next five years, with all three being third place finishes.

Over the years he claimed Late Model feature race wins at Geraldton, Narrogin, Margaret River and Bunbury, while he would also score one Late Model feature win at Claremont Speedway on the 17th of March 2000.

Moving to the Perth Motorplex and John was a regular competitor at the venue but despite being unable to grab a feature win, he did finish on the podium numerous times. John also contested the first two Australian Late Model Championships (where he came home fourteenth and twelfth) before his final race in Late Models, which was in March 2003.

John sadly passed away in 2019, but this weekend we again celebrate him and his contribution to Late Models as part of the 26th annual WA Late Model Title!
