Steve Francis has tonight claimed his fourth feature win from as many starts and in the process has once again become the USA vs WA invasion Tour Champion.
Francis would once again qualify from pole of the thirty lap main event, this time at Albany Speedway, alongside second high points man Craig Vosbergen.
As the race went green it was Francis who got the jump and lead away Devin Moran at the completion of one lap. As the field came around to complete lap two, Wade Carter spun, leaving Chris Pavlovich nowhere to go but into his side, with Michael Holmes also getting involved.
This would bring on the first and only yellow light of the race, with one lap officially completed. Luckily all three cars were able to restart while Carter, who until that point had been having his best night since he came to Western Australia, was sent to the rear.
The race would restart again and this time it would go for the next twenty nine laps without a stoppage, though there were several near misses. The first incident came shortly after the first yellows, with Pavlovich half spinning and hitting Matt Goodlad before he headed infield as Goodlad continued on, albeit after dropping a few positions.
Back up the front and with Francis setting off in front, Moran and Paul Stubber began engaging in a merry dance for the second place. Lap four saw Stubber putting pressure on Moran, then one lap later Stubber would take over the position.
Stubber then set out after Francis, closing the gap from 2.007 seconds to 0.832 seconds in just one lap, then sitting right on Francis’ tail at the completion of lap eight. However, as Stubber was chasing Francis, Moran had also fought back and passed Stubber a lap later to reclaim second.
Again Stubber fought back and would grab the second position once again on lap ten, but as these two were battling it out, Francis had managed to pull away once again.
Francis would continue his ascent through lapped traffic, lapping seventh place on lap fourteen, Behind him Stubber and Moran continued to fight it out, with Moran utilizing the lapped traffic to his advantage and grabbing second once more on lap seventeen.
From here it was all simply elementary as Francis continued to not only race away from second and third, but to lap every car including fourth place, with Francis crossing the line to win the thirty lap feature ahead of Moran and Stubber, the only three cars to still be on the lead lap.
Other than Pavlovich, all other cars that started the feature race were able to finish, while Veronica McCann was unable to take the green in the feature after lingering issues from a crash at Collie Speedway last night.
Francis nearly went through the entire series undefeated, winning all but one of his races: that defeat coming at the hands of Kye Blight who bettered him tonight in heat three. Other heat winners tonight were Francis (2), Stubber, Carter and Vosbergen.
Courtesy of his series results, Francis is officially the 2017 USA vs WA Invasion Tour Champion with a near perfect 481 points. Devin Moran came second with 441 points while Paul Stubber came home strongly to finish third overall with 424 points.
Although the series is now over, the action still hasn’t finished at the WA Late Model Title will be held next weekend at the Perth Motorplex, so stay tuned throughout the week for all those details.
