Last night at Ellenbrook Speedway Warren Oldfield claimed the thirty lap feature event and in the process made it the fifth year in a row that the name Oldfield has been etched onto the Ray Tulk Memorial trophy. Warren first won it in 2010, then brother Jamie won it the following two years before Warren reclaimed it again last season before winning again last night.
The feature race was an epic affair, with racing that thrilled the record crowd in attendance and had many talking after the meeting. Brad Blake was the man to beat early as he raced away to the lead, with Jamie, Warren and Jason Oldfield chasing close behind. Just as Craig Vosbergen also began to make his presence known, the leading pack made their way into lapped traffic, where another car made a mistake and came across the front of Blake and almost ended his race then and there. Warren and Jamie Oldfield managed to avoid it but other cars got caught to varying degrees. Blake was lucky enough to have minor repairs made and retake his position at the head of the field.
After the race restarted, Jamie, running in second, suddenly suffered motor damage and slowed before heading infield, while a handful of laps later Warren Oldfield worked his way past Blake for the lead. Oldfield would hold this lead for the remaining twenty one laps while behind him the battle was on for third, where Vosbergen and Jason Oldfield were fighting it out. Craig grabbed third on lap twenty three, then Oldfield got back past him on lap twenty six. Vosbergen fought back hard and two laps later grabbed third again while Jay Cardy also made his presence felt as he tried to gain another position. As the chequers flew though it was all Warren Oldfield as he grabbed the win from Blake, Vosbergen, Jason Oldfield and Cardy rounding out the top five.
Ryan Halliday won the Cardy Race Components Voucher for coming home eighth while Veronica McCann took home the Octane Hard Charger award and Dean King the Hoosier award. Earlier Warren Oldfield won the Lucas Oils pole award after claiming the A Dash in what can only be described as a crazy race, with cars trying their hardest all over the tram and ending with Craig Vosbergen stranded infield. After that, the B Dash went to Ryan Halliday.
Heat races earlier in the night were also spectacular with Jason and Warren Oldfield claiming two wins apiece while Jamie Oldfield and Brad Blake each claimed one. Even the Late Models Chief Steward Jerome Sutton later made the comment that he was very impressed with the quality of driving throughout the night, but particularly in the feature race and he wished to congratulate all drivers. With twenty seven drivers unloading in the pits, this is an amazing effort and high praise indeed.
The Late Models now have a short period of time to ensure their cars are ready to rumble as their next meeting is this coming weekend, Saturday the 18th of October at the season opener for the Perth Motorplex.
All the details for this event will be released later in the week so keep an eye out!
