Erb Repeats!

For the second time in as many years American superstar Tyler ‘Terbo’ Erb has raced his way to a dominant victory at the Make Smoking History Collie Speedway in round three of the Di Candilo Steel City USA vs WA Invasion Tour.

Of course, Erb had to survive the forty lap feature race, a torrid affair full of restarts to begin with before a thirty six lap stanza running nonstop.

The yellows came on almost as quickly as the green lights did to begin the race, as in the first turn Chris Pavlovich went in hard on the inside line with Michael Holmes on the outside, Pavlovich just hooking the infield berm and spinning around in front of the pack, lucky to only be hit by Marc Giancola and Brent Vosbergen. Giancola headed infield, with the rest of the field able to rejoin.

The second start was just as bad, this time with Paul Stubber spinning in front of the field and being hit by Mick Comley, Cameron Pearson, Brad Blake, Joe Godsey and Jeff Roth who all piled in with nowhere to go. Only Blake, Comley and Roth were able to restart.

Take three saw Erb immediately into the lead with Jamie Oldfield ducking by Kye Blight for second. Michael Holmes and Bight made contact coming out of turn four as they fought for position, Holmes coming out on top and taking over third place. One lap was completed and the yellows came on for Brent Vosbergen who had a flat tyre, with the new rule in place that allowed him to replace it and restart from the rear.

Erb would lead away on the restart, with Holmes and Oldfield side by side for second, Oldfield eventually getting the nose in front going into turn three.

This allowed Blight to close the gap on Holmes as he too began looking for a way back past him.

Behind them Billy Moyer made his way past Joe Chalmers for fifth, with Jeff Roth spinning shortly after in turn three to bring on the yellow lights with four laps complete.

The next restart saw Erb lead away again but this time Pavlovich and Jay Cardy came together, both spinning in turn one, then Vosbergen spinning in turn two to bring out the yellows before even a quarter of a lap was complete.

Joe Chalmers headed infield under the yellows, leaving eleven cars for the remaining thirty six lap distance.

Erb shot away from the field this time as Oldfield held onto second and Holmes survived a momentary challenge from Blight. Brad Blake was the one with the moves, moving into sixth place and using the lowline to work the inside of Moyer. Moyer however was able to hang on for fifth, the field settling into a nice line as they each waiting for the other to make a mistake.

With eight completed Erb had nearly a 3.5 second lead on Oldfield. By lap ten that lead was out to over five seconds, and by lap twelve Erb was staring down the barrel of lapped traffic.

Jay Cardy retired to the infield, while Erb began making short work of the lapped cars, moving inside and outside of them as he worked his way through.

The next segment of laps saw very little change in the order, each driver locked down to the bottom and waiting for the driver in front to make a mistake. The closest battle was between Blight, Moyer and Blake who were fighting for positions four to six, but none able to make any moves.

Erb’s lead was out to 6.5 seconds with fifteen to go, Oldfield settled in second with Holmes still chasing him in third. With ten to go Erb had extended his lead again to just under eight seconds.

With only a handful of laps remaining Erb found himself at the back of a five car battle, but he didn’t panic, biding his time and not making any moves until he was certain he could get through, his lead just over seven seconds with five to go.

From here it was all elementary, Erb winning by over 6.5 seconds from Oldfield and Holmes.

Courtesy of tonight’s results, Erb now has jumped into the overall Di Candilo Steel City USA vsWA Invasion Tour standings lead, with a twelve point gap back to second placed Billy Moyer and with one round remaining. Holmes, Godsey and Blight currently round out the top five. Full point’s standings will be posted tomorrow.

Teams now have just twenty four hours before they do it all again for the final time in the series. They will head down the highway to the Make Smoking History Bunbury Speedway for the final night of action tomorrow night, so make sure you are there to see what is sure to be an epic conclusion!
